Curriculum-

The school’s mission statement is reflected throughout the curriculum taught at Holy Family.

The Lord’s mission of forming children in the wisdom of Christ lives at Holy Family Catholic School.  Similarly, Jesus grew in wisdom guided by Mary and Joseph.

Our parishioners, school families, clergy, faculty and staff together seek to nurture the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical development of our students. 

Every member of our school family strives for holiness, manifested in loving service to all. 

Holy Family strives for excellence in Catholic Education and tradition.

 

Holy Family adheres to the Diocese of Arlington Curriculum Guidelines.  

Core subjects include:

Religion	Educating children in the fullness of Catholic faith.
Language Arts	Reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Mathematics	Understanding and applying quantitative skills and solving real-life problems
Science	Developing scientific inquiry skills; maximizing hands-on learning to explore, discover, and experience the universe
Social Studies	Understanding rights and duties of citizenship; arts and cultures of past and present; geography and environment; global solidarity and respect for differences
Spanish	Developing grammar and conversational skills to increase knowledge of practical and technical aspects of Spanish

Additional special subjects include:

Art	Learning about the elements and principles of art, how art reflects culture, and how it impacts the everyday world
Computer	Keyboarding, basic operating systems, and mainstream office applications provide a solid foundation in computer skills.
Library	Developing mastery of basic library skills
Music	Studying composers and music history helps increase student appreciation of music
Physical Education	Focusing on fitness and healthy lifestyle.

 

Accreditation

Holy Family Catholic School is accredited by the Virginia Catholic Education Association with most recent re-accreditation in 2005. Over half of our teachers have advanced degrees.

 

Testing

Holy Family administers the following standardized tests:

• TerraNova tests to assess knowledge of specific subjects (grades 1-7)
• ACRE religion exam for grades 5 and 8
• Phonological Awareness and Literacy Screening (PALS) to evaluate progress in K-3

The TerraNova standardized tests, published by MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, are administered each spring in grades 1-7 to assess achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, vocabulary, spelling, and other areas. TerraNova helps teachers assess student performance as a means of planning relevant instruction to support the established curriculum. Holy Family has scored above the Diocesan averages on the TerraNova tests.
